Continuing our series on how to get full mail headers in popular browsers...
In Eudora, if you open up the message (double click on the line for it in the browser panel), there should be a button labeled "Blah Blah Blah". Clicking on this should give full header details.
If you're reading your email in Mozilla's Thunderbird (as I do with the mail accounts where I have a choice), it's easy to get full headers. Select View from the top menu bar, go down to headers, and to the right you'll see choices of "All" and "Normal". Set the checkbox accordingly. If you just forward to rwelty@averillpark.net at that point I should get everything I need.
Micro$oft tends to move things around and rename them from release to release for no apparent reason, so this should not be considered a definitive answer to the question of "how do I get full headers for a spam when I use Outlook?". These instructions apply to the version of Outlook in Office 2000, SR-1, and hopefully will get you close if you're using another variant.
If you have the actual spam in your basic outlook pane, to get headers, first double click on the message summary line to bring up a separate window containing the message. Now, click on View and then Options in the View menu. A dialog named "Message Options" will pop up, and the headers will be in a greyed out scroll panel at the bottom, labeled "Internet Headers". You cannot edit these, but you can select them and then use Control-C to put a copy in the clipboard.
The message headers may, in some flavors of Outlook, show up under Tools->Options; at least, I have a vague recollection of this from years ago.
The message headers are of value to me in researching the internet "neighborhood" from which the spam originates. I am particularly interested in the last Received: line pushed into the header showing where the message came from (Received: lines are trivial to forge and so often only the last one, at the top of the list, is really interesting.)
If you find yourself with political spam in hand, I'm interested in seeing it. I'll want full details, including full headers (which depending on your email client, might be hard to get). A example of what I mean by full headers may be found here. Pretty mind numbing, eh?
Submissions should be sent to me at rwelty@averillpark.net.
